Well its been another week of interesting developments all around Bristol so let’s get down to it with a little round-up of the more tasty morsels.
One of Bristol’s most talented up and coming artists Rory Doona has submitted a piece of artwork to Capcom’s Street Fighter 4 design competition. If he wins, his design will be featured on a huge amount of promotion, and it would be great to have Rory receive wider recognition.
Here’s his submission:![]()
And here are details on how to vote for it:
Click here to vote for Rory's artwork
You can catch Rory drawing live tonight (Tuesday 10th March) at Weapon Of Choice alongside Dylan Shipley. Get yourself down there and show your support!
Whilst we’re on the subject of art, the Crimes Of Passion show kicks off at the RWOE Academy on the 20th March. We’re telling you this now, because spaces are limited for the opening night so get in touch now to book a place and avoid disappointment. In their own words:
“This Spring Bristol’s oldest and grandest gallery, the Royal West Of England Academy is throwing open all 5 of it’s galleries to host a major show by 50 of the city’s best known and most successful graffiti and street artists. This is the first major show of its kind in the city since the Arnolfini’s groundbreaking 1985 show, Graffiti Art and is a full-blown celebration of the city’s rich and diverse contemporary scene.
Bristol has nurtured many of the UK’s most successful graffiti and street artists, including 3D, Inkie, Banksy, Nick Walker, Sickboy, Cyclops and TCF Crew, to name but a few. The city continues to be a breeding ground for a wealth of exceptional creative talent and continues to have one of the UK’s most diverse and thriving scenes.
Crimes Of Passion takes the love of (and heartfelt dedication to) the art form as its starting point, but is far from a typical gallery retrospective, all the artists will be showing completely new work, as well as installation pieces and working both directly onto (and into) the walls of the gallery.
Crimes of Passion will also include a citywide programme of large-scale painting, a photographic exhibition, a film season at local arts cinema The Cube (www.cubecinema.com) and a series of workshops and talks.

Friday 13th may be unlucky for some – but not for Bristol’s clubland. As we’ve mentioned before, we’ll be running the second room this Friday at the newly-opened Basement 45 (formerly the Mandrake) for Empathy, so if you’re not one of the squillion people attending Bloc this weekend, come down for some quality beats!

Also on Friday is one of Bristol’s best nights for showcasing Bristol talent – Liquid Lounge. As always it’s on at the Croft, and this time round they have another quality line up as you can see.
Saturday’s pick of the action has to be Season Five – this crew is making leaps and bounds in pushing the most forward-thinking sounds in both Dubstep and D&B. This month they have a hot booking in versatile producer Breakage – as well as up and coming producer Untold. It all goes down at the Tube from 10pm on Sat 14th.
As a final note, keep an eye on the vastly improved Headfirst Calendar for updated listings in and around the Bristol area.

It's been some time now since Mary Anne Hobbes showcased the Bristol : Rise Up special back in December 2008, so BUG thought it was well worth putting up the full programme if you missed it. Whilst the snow mounts up outside keep yourself warm in the knowledge we have some fantastic content this week to keep your brain toasty and your eyeballs steaming.
First up BUG favourite Kallendar has dropped some more sweet science on us with this new set of tracks, Jiminy Cricket and Zennith. Kallendar's production has come on leaps and bounds over the last few months and these tracks are testament to that progress. The former track is an atmospheric bubbler connecting the dots between dubstep and breakbeat, whilst the latter is a cinematic driving smash-up of a song. Incredible skills from this fledgling producer and one to watch for the future. Download the mixed promo version below.

If you haven't been checking the UKHD show on Passion FM recently then you need your head checked, because they've been firing out some seriously heavyweight mixes. Tune in every Wednesday night at 9pm for the latest fix of all things bass-heavy and banging.

Switching it up there's some interesting happenings in Bristol this week, beginning with We Live Here, a weekender of exhibitions and live music at the Arnolfini which looks very intriguing indeed. A weekend pass will set you back £15, with music from Freeze Puppy, Magnus Spectum and many more as well as installations and exhibits from the region's best up and coming artists.
If that doesn't satisfy your artistic urges, then head over to the Folk House from this Friday for the launch of a new exhibition by local illustrator Dave Bain, who is showcasing his alternative vision of the cover art of some classic books. We'll be bringing you a full interview with the man himself later this week.
Pick of the club nights this week has to be the charity event at The Croft for the Malawi Education Project, featuring a Bristol debut for esoteric dubstepper Boxcutter alongside Appleblim and some quality local support. Tickets are £7 and it's all for a good cause so get on it!
Across the city at Motion, Drum & Bass crew Intrigue are launching their new label with a quality line up featuring Jenna G and Krust amongst others. The debut release on the imprint comes out tomorrow and is well worth the investment, and you can preview the tracks at their online shop. We'll be bringing you an interview with the Intrigue boys next week.
If you'd prefer an earlier start to the weekend, then Pollen have the answer. A Bristol debut for up and coming producer Bullion as well as possibly the first Skwee showcase in the city from Metske. Well worth a look if you're after some quality beats and only £4 before 11pm too.

BEST MIX 2008 - APPLEBLIM : DUBSTEP ALLSTARS 6
If one of the key points to a good mix is how often you return to it, then Appleblim’s addition to the Tempa series must be fantastic, as it hasn’t left the BUG stereo since it was released earlier this year. From the soaring vocals of Pinch’s Get Up to the sparkling melody of Peverelist’s Infinity Is Now, as well as a TRG triple mix and perfect last track in Geiom’s Reminissin, it’s a mix that BUG has come back to time and time again to enjoy.

CHEEBA – THE CASE OF THE MISSING RECORDS
How do you even categorise something like Cheeba’s mix? An insane mash of styles and sounds, it surely had a factor in him being inaugurated into the Ninja Tune camp this year. Some times turntabalist mixes can be tiresome, a showcase of style over content, but Cheeba always seems intuitively capable of holding your attention throughout the sonic odyssey he creates for you. Outstanding.

JACKOV & KALLENDAR – RISE OF THE BAGMAN
Two of the hardest-working DJs on the local scene, it felt as if they were slept on in 2008 after establishing themselves over the last few years. Which is a genuine shame as they grew in terms of ability and selection this year to become two of the most formidable DJs around. BUG could have selected any of the handful of mixes they released this year, but Rise Of The Bagman was the most succinct in encapsulating their style, with the bonus of including spits from some talented local MCs.
